Chief William Quigley reports that the Cohasset Police Department responded to a serious, multi-vehicle crash on North Main Street earlier today.

At approximately 3:20 p.m., Cohasset Police received multiple reports of a multi-car crash in the area of 230 North Main St. Upon arrival, first responders found that there were four motor vehicles involved in the crash, including a 2020 Ford Ranger, a 2006 Lexus sedan, a 2017 Mercedes Benz sedan and a 2011 Chevrolet sedan.

An on-scene investigation determined that the driver of the Ford pick-up truck, an 18-year-old Cohasset man, was traveling northbound on North Main Street, allegedly at a high rate of speed, when the vehicle veered into oncoming traffic hitting the Lexus sedan.

The Ford then struck the Mercedes Benz, which was being operated by a 28-year-old Hull man. The Ford then struck a fire hydrant, causing the hydrant to snap off its base and then hit a parked Chevrolet sedan which was unoccupied at the time of the crash.

Three cars, the Ford Ranger, Lexus and Chevrolet, were totaled in the crash. All four vehicles were towed from the scene.

The operator of the Lexus, a 73-year-old Cohasset woman, had to be extricated by firefighters from her vehicle using hydraulic extrication tools.

The operators of the Ford Ranger and Lexus, along with a passenger in the Lexus, were transported to area hospitals by Cohasset, Hingham and Scituate fire department ambulances. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

North Main Street was closed for approximately an hour and a half while the scene was still active. The road has since been reopened.

Through the course of the investigation and speaking with witnesses, police believe the driver was asleep behind the wheel prior to the crash.

The investigation remains ongoing and no further information is available at this time.

“This was an extremely dangerous incident, and I commend our first responders and mutual aid partners for their quick response,” Chief Quigley said.

The Cohasset Water Department also responded to the scene and arrangements are being made to replace the hydrant.
