Chief William Quigley is pleased to announce that the Cohasset Police Department recently used grant funds awarded to the department to combat unsafe driving throughout town.
The Cohasset Police Department was awarded a grant in the amount of $11,973 from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security’s Office of Grants and Research (OGR). The grant funds were used to increase distracted driving patrols to combat unsafe driving during April’s Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
Between April 7-9, Cohasset Police officers assigned to the grant worked in pairs at dangerous intersections and roads in Cohasset to specifically target drivers who were texting while driving. During this time, 34 citations were issued to drivers who were observed texting while driving in direct violation of the ‘hands free’ law enacted in February 2020. The associated fine is $105 per violation.
“Distracted driving is extremely dangerous and is the leading cause of many of our crashes within the town,” Chief Quigley said. “The volume of violations for texting and driving issued during our distracted driving focused patrols is alarming. We will continue to educate, enforce and work with town officials and DPW engineers in an effort to reduce distracted driving and the number of crashes that occur.”
Town-Wide Speed Limit to be Enforced
In late February, the Cohasset Select Board voted to make a town-wide speed limit of 25 miles per hour effective May 1.
The town-wide speed limit will apply to all roads in Cohasset, with the exception of select main thoroughfares that will remain at higher speeds as deemed safe and appropriate by officials.
Community members should also note that some roads will remain at 20 miles per hour or be lowered to 20MPH, including the area in and around the Cohasset Common and Village.
The town-wide speed limit will be enforced by Cohasset Police to ensure safe driving.
